Microsoft Excel is a powerful and versatile spreadsheet application used to organise, calculate, analyse and present information. From creating simple spreadsheets and managing data through to using formulas, functions, charts, PivotTables and more advanced data analysis tools, Excel can help you work more efficiently and make better use of your information.

Whether you are new to Excel or looking to build on your existing skills, beginner, intermediate and advanced Excel training courses are available. Training can be tailored to your level of experience and the way you use Excel in your work or organisation.

Excel Beginners (Level 1)

Course Details:

The Excel Beginners course is recommended for novice users who wish to update their computer skills and use a spreadsheet effectively. The course will help you produce professional workbooks. You will be able to format, create, and print workbooks with coupled functions such as Sum, Average, Max, and Min.

We assume that you have no or little existing knowledge of Excel and want to gain confidence in how spreadsheets can be used both at home and in the workplace.

Course Information:

Once completed, you should be able to understand and apply the following concepts:

  • Create, alter, and save a simple workbook.
  • How to access the Help menu.
  • Name and colour a Sheet tab.
  • Make multiple copies of an existing spreadsheet.
  • Use the Formatting group of buttons to change text.
  • Introduce the Alignment group and application of associated buttons such as Merge & Center.
  • Use the Number group of buttons to change numbers to currency with additional decimal places, plus the use of its dialog box.
  • Introduction to formulas including multiplication, division, adding and subtracting.
  • Looks at the various crosses in Excel and how to apply them.
  • How to copy (fill) a formula across or down the screen.
  • Looks at functions such as AutoSum, Count, Max, Min, Today and Now.
  • Adjust row and column sizes, plus inserting a single and multiple columns or rows. Plus the use of the Cells group which can also apply these formats.
  • Difference between Absolute and Relative reference and how to apply it using the F4 key.
  • Printing options plus accessing the Page Setup hyperlink.
  • Use of a hyperlink to attend a meeting or organise a conference.
  • How to use the Editing group of buttons especially Find and Replace.
  • Use of the GoTo option to access various column and row settings.
  • Introduction to Charting and how to apply Titles and move the Legend.

Excel Intermediate (Level 2)

Course Details:

The Excel Intermediate course is recommended for most businesses. This course
will help you produce more effective and efficient workbooks. Some of the more
advanced functions will be addressed such as flash fill, data validation, linking and
grouping worksheets, sorting and filtering data, lookup functions and sophisticated
formulas.

We assume that you have some Excel skills or have completed the Excel Beginners
course prior to this session.

Course Information:

Once completed, you should be able to understand and apply the following
concepts:

  • Revision of functions such as AVERAGE, MAX, MIN and COUNT, if required.
  • Applying new functions such as COUNTIF and COUNTBLANK.
  • Look at some of the Excel options and how to apply them.
  • Use of Flash fill (It will save you so much time!)
  • Fill options including months, weeks and many others. This is not covered in most courses and will save you a lot of time.
  • Data validation and applying the rules.
  • Naming ranges and how to apply them to a formula.
  • Using functions as such VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP, COUNTIF, SUMIF and AVERAGEIF.
  • Inserting a table within an Excel spreadsheet.
  • Linking worksheets to consolidate the data.
  • Creating a pivot table and chart, plus the associated analysis tools.
  • Sheet Protection plus the use of Passwords.
  • Filtering and Sorting data to an advanced level, incorporating “and” and “or” functions.
  • Customised Charting including Combination Charts which can include rainfall and temperature as an example.

Excel Advanced (Level 3)

Course Details:

The Excel Advanced course is highly recommended for businesses that use more
complicated spreadsheets. This course will help you produce efficient and
reliable workbooks. We will look at the more advanced functions such as XLOOKUP,
INDEX and INDIRECT.

We assume that you have used Excel to a proficient level in the workplace or have
completed the Excel Intermediate course.

Course Information:

Once completed, you should be able to understand and apply the following
concepts:

  • Revision of VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP.
  • What is XLOOKUP, INDEX and INDIRECT and their application.
  • Error checking.
  • Importing data from delimited files and what it means for your company.
  • Revision of Pivotables and applying some of the advanced options.
  • Pivotable Charts and how to create and modify them.
  • Creating a new query from a Database file such as Access.
  • Scenarios – How to create and use them, perhaps for your mortgage.
  • Using the SUMIFS function with multiple criteria.
  • Data Consolidation into a single worksheet.
  • Creating a Subtotal worksheet and its uses.
  • Outlining and Grouping concepts.
  • Macros – Recording and editing a macro plus the difference between local and global macros.
  • Macros – Use of relative reference and what it means for your workbook.
  • Macros – how to modify them using basic VBA programming.
